Why Microsoft and Apple Will Never Call You for Tech Support

# Why Microsoft and Apple Will Never Call You for Tech Support

Imagine you are browsing the internet, reading the news or shopping online, when suddenly your screen freezes. A bright red pop-up appears, warning you that your computer is infected with a dangerous virus. The message urges you to call a toll-free number immediately for technical support.

It is a terrifying moment. But before you pick up the phone, you need to know one crucial fact: that pop-up is a lie. It is the opening move of a tech support scam, and falling for it can cost you thousands of dollars.

How the Scam Works

Tech support scammers rely on fear and urgency. They want you to believe your computer is broken or your personal data is being stolen right at that very moment.

The scam usually starts in one of two ways. The first is the fake pop-up: a deceptive advertisement freezes your browser and displays a fake warning message. The second is the cold call: you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from Microsoft, Apple, or another major tech company, telling you they have detected a problem with your computer.

If you call the number or stay on the line, the scammer will ask you to download a program that gives them remote access to your computer. Once they are in, they will run fake "diagnostic tests" to prove your computer is infected. Finally, they will demand payment, often hundreds of dollars, to "fix" the non-existent problem.

The Golden Rule of Tech Support

There is one simple rule that will protect you from these scams every single time: Major tech companies do not monitor your computer for viruses, and they will never call you or display pop-up messages asking you to call them.

If your computer actually has a virus, your installed antivirus software might alert you, but it will never demand that you call a phone number. If you get a call from someone claiming to be tech support, hang up immediately. If you get a pop-up warning, close your browser.

*Practical Tip:* If a fake pop-up freezes your browser and you cannot close the window normally, do not panic. On a Windows computer, press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and open the Task Manager to force the browser to close. On a Mac, press Command + Option + Esc to force quit the browser.

What to Do If You Need Real Help

If your computer is genuinely acting strange and you think you might need technical support, you must be the one to initiate contact. Go directly to the official website of the company (like support.apple.com or support.microsoft.com) and find their contact information there. Never trust a phone number provided in a pop-up window or an unsolicited email.
